Enriching Ireland’s Media Landscape
Working to develop and regulate a diverse, safe and thriving media landscape, Coimisiún na Meán has been established further to the provisions of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act 2022.
Message from the Commissioners
Welcome to Coimisiún na Meán – Ireland’s new commission for regulating broadcasters and online media, and supporting media development.
Our work will build on the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, whose staff and responsibilities have been transferred to Coimisiún na Meán.
We are committed to ensuring a thriving, diverse and safe online and media landscape. This means having a mix of different voices, opinions and sources of news. This means protecting children and all of us from harmful content.
Coimisiún na Meán’s work will include:
- Setting up a new regulatory regime for online safety.
- Regulating broadcasting and on-demand services.
- Supporting the development of the wider media sector with funding schemes, together with initiatives to promote the Irish language, media literacy, as well as equality, diversity and inclusion in the media sector.
We published our first Work Programme on the 20th June 2023.
Online services cut across borders, so we will work closely with our counterparts in other EU states and with the European Commission. Coimisiún na Meán will have a leading role because Ireland is the country where many large online businesses have their European headquarters.
Properly functioning broadcast and online media are essential to everyone’s fundamental rights in a democratic society. We look forward to working with all stakeholders for the benefit of people in Ireland and across Europe.
This website provides some initial information about Coimisiún na Meán. It will be replaced by a full website in due course. In the meantime, information regarding broadcasting regulation in Ireland remains available on www.bai.ie.
