Coimisiún na Meán has today (09.10.2026) launched a consultation on its Draft Commercial Communications Code and Rules. The Code and Rules apply to advertising, sponsorship, product placement and other types of commercial promotion on Irish radio and television. The Draft Commercial Communications Code and Rules consolidate the existing media service codes and media service rules relating to commercial communications into a single document. It further proposes additional protections for children and includes structural and thematic updates to the Code and Rules in the interest of improving clarity and ease of use for broadcasters, advertisers and the general public.
The Draft Commercial Communications Code and Rules consolidate existing commercial communications codes and rules, which include:
- General Commercial Communications Code (Radio and Television Broadcasters) – which sets out rules for broadcasters on commercial communications including advertisements, sponsorships and product placement.
- Children’s Commercial Communications Code (Radio and Television Broadcasters) – which sets out additional rules for commercial communications directed at children and is aimed at protecting audiences under 18 years of age.
- Media Service Code and Media Service Rules (Advertising, Teleshopping, Signal Integrity & Information) – which sets limits on the level of advertising, teleshopping, signal integrity and information that television broadcasters may have as part of their services.
- Media Service Code and Media Service Rules (Advertising- Radio Broadcasters) – which sets limits on the level of advertising that radio broadcasters may have as part of their services.
The consultation will run from 9 October 2026 until 13 November 2026.
