Public consultation on our draft Media Pluralism Policy now open

A group of colleagues in a meeting

Coimisiún na Meán has today (1 September 2025) opened a public consultation on its draft Media Pluralism Policy. The Policy is intended to provide clarity on Coimisiún na Meán’s understanding of media pluralism, and how media pluralism will guide the activities of the organisation.

An Coimisiún has a number of powers, functions and responsibilities to uphold freedom of expression and ensure pluralism of the media.

Under the draft Policy, media pluralism means a diversity in media ownership, media services, media content, and exposure to media.

To safeguard and promote media pluralism, the draft Policy outlines the importance of public service media, quality and independent journalism, informed choice and access to media, and innovation and inclusion in the media landscape.

The draft Policy also describes a number of factors that An Coimisiún may use to measure media pluralism, including the viability of media services, concentration in media markets, and representation in media content.

The consultation is open until 5pm on the 24 October 2025.

Further information is available in the Consultation Document.
