Coimisiún na Meán has today (16.10.2025) announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Data Protection Commission (DPC). The Agreement represents a framework of cooperation and information sharing between the two regulators. Coimisiún na Meán may enter into such an agreement under Section 32(1) of the Broadcasting Act 2009 as amended.

The objective of this Agreement is to enable close working relations between Coimisiún na Meán and the Data Protection Commission. The Agreement will assist with the discharging of statutory functions, including to cooperate on matters of common interest such as upholding the rights of children, promoting awareness of their respective regulatory functions, providing support and information in relation to queries and complaints and driving consistency in regulation in the digital space.

Speaking at the signing earlier today, Digital Services Commissioner John Evans said: “Coimisiún na Meán is committed to ensuring a media landscape that the public can trust and one where online platforms are obliged to protect the safety, security and privacy of users, particularly children. Through this cooperation agreement, we will ensure close collaboration with the Data Protection Commission, which will help maximise our coherence on digital issues and support wider regulatory co-operation at home and abroad.”

In addition, An Coimisiún and the DPC also approved a joint statement which commits the regulators to advance the safety of children and the protection of their personal data online. The statement details the regulators’ shared ambition in relation to children’s safety and privacy online and includes the expectation from both regulators that online services must comply with the law or face regulatory consequences.

Online Safety Commissioner Niamh Hodnett said: “It is important to us that Ireland has a media landscape that safeguards the rights, wellbeing and development of children. Through close cooperation with the DPC, we are dedicated to mobilising our respective regulatory roles in relation to online safety and data protection in order to uphold children’s rights online.”
