General resources
Recent research conducted by us shows that almost 60% of general election candidates and nearly half of local election candidates surveyed reported experiencing negative online behaviour during the most recent general and local elections.
In collaboration with key stakeholders like An Gárda Síochána (AGS), we have created packs that aim to empower various professionals with the skills and knowledge should they encounter abuse online.
Journalist Pack
Online abuse directed at journalists is a threat to freedom of expression and can undermine democracy. Our main message to journalists is that threats and abuse are not a part of their job and they should report illegal and harmful content online.
This pack, in collaboration with AGS and the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), looks at various scenarios that could affect journalists and signposts them to supports if they experience abuse online, as well as showing them how to report abusive comments to various platforms.
Election Candidate Pack
2024 was an incredibly busy year for elections in Ireland and worldwide. We developed this Election Candidate Information Pack, in collaboration with AGS, to address the growing trend of abuse being directed at candidates running for election.
Through scenarios, we advise on what candidates can do to protect themselves should they encounter illegal or harmful content online. This pack may be helpful in advance of the presidential elections in 2025.
