Public Service Media Reports

Coimisiún na Meán has several responsibilities regarding the assessment of RTÉ and TG4. In fulfilling this remit we publish statutory reports from time to time.

Five-Year Review of Public Funding for Public Service Media

In 2025, Coimisiún na Meán completed its Five-Year Review of the adequacy of public funding for Public Service Media in Ireland as per its statutory requirement in Section 124 of the Broadcasting Act 2009 (as amended). This work was supported by an independent analysis commissioned from consultants Communications Chambers, helping to inform our own recommendations. These recommendations for 2026 and 2027 reflect our statutory responsibilities, strategic objectives, regulatory experience, and the broad evidence base gathered through research and consultation.

We strongly support RTÉ and TG4 in their ongoing commitment to deliver value for Irish audiences and to maintain their unique role in Ireland’s media landscape. At the same time, we recognise the need for significant transformation in the years ahead. To innovate, modernise operations, and fully realise their public service mandates, RTÉ and TG4 require predictable, stable, multi-annual funding aligned with these ambitions, in line with the principles and intentions of the European Media Freedom Act. This level of certainty is vital for long-term planning, platform-agnostic innovation, and the continued delivery of high-quality content to audiences nationwide.
